If all four quadrants are performing well a family business is an exceptional business to be in. It will enable an individual to connect with their family, build something together, foster trust and develop alongside them.

If, however, these four quadrants are not functioning well, this can then lead to a difficult situation for a family business – the family dynamic is very different to a normal employer and employee relationship. With a family member or spouse it is much more difficult to contain and control emotions, that would be possible in a more traditional employer to employee relationship.

If this is looked at in relation to the I and WE quadrant – it will show that the individual has not developed the skills necessary to relate to a spouse or family member at a deep enough level.

Additionally, each quadrant has a line of development. Each of these lines of development illustrate how skilled one is in each area and once they reach a particular point in the line, they have mastered the skill reasonably well. If they continue further up the line they are able to do it fantastically well, and then rather than a fight its constantly a pleasure to be interacting with them and so produces a virtual cycle of pleasure,

rather than a negative cycle of dysfunction. The vast majority of people are not able to go beyond that particular F5 level and therefore its constantly negative and difficult.

SBC, takes an integrated consulting approach in relation to its clients. The team will look in detail across each quadrant, to establish and understand how skilled an individual is in each area. It can then take steps to provide the right solutions and recommendations for each enterprise to achieve its maximum potential.

This involves

  • Agreeing to work together
  • Meetings to assess and understand current situation and desired situation
  • Implement 4 quadrant approach
  • Collect background information, talk to key stakeholders etc

Recommendations phase

This involves

  • Make recommendations on what level of support is needed
  • Discuss short-term, medium term and long-term plans.
  • Identify what needs to be done – why, how and when.
  • Provide different options in terms of levels of service, pricing and timescales – retainer options and ad hoc services

Monitoring and evaluation phase

  • Agree schedule of regular updates e.g. weekly call / monthly updates / review meetings
  • Monitor and evaluate what has been achieved and what needs to be done next
